GINA PARENO AND JACLYN JOSE, MAY LABAN SA CANNES

The “Serbis” team has finally landed in Cannes, France to attend the prestigous international film festival. For those of you who are not updated with Serbis, it’s a film directed by Brillante Mendoza and it was chosen by the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival to participate in this year’s competition. The film stars Gina Pareno (who got a land slide of awards here and abroad for her role in indie film Kubrador), Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz and Coco Martin among others. The film is about a family that owns a run down movie house and gives “special services” to its moviegoers.

Matagal na tayong walang entry na in competition sa film fest since Lino Brocka’s 1984 film “Bayan Ko, Kapit Sa Patalim” kaya super dooper proud ang cast and crew for making it to the list of 20 competing films around the world. ”Serbis” is even competing against films made by Clint Eastwood and Steven Soderbergh. At ang balita, malakas ang laban ni Ms. Gina at Jaclyn for the Best Actress award.

Kaya sa “Serbis” cast and crew, good luck sa inyong lahat dyan sa Cannes and may the force be with you!

BEA ON SOLO FLIGHT

Well it’s been talked about that John Lloyd Cruz isn’t part of the shortlist to play the love interest of Bea Alonzo in the Philippine version of Betty La Fea. Unless you live in a rock, then you still do not know that Bea landed the much coveted role of Betty. And you would know of course that the leading man hasn’t been announced yet. According to a source who spoke to John Lloyd, he is happy for his screen partner for getting the role of a lifetime and he has allegedly accepted management’s decision of not bringing them together for this project. But John Lloyd is quite confident that this will only be one of the few projects that their loveteam won’t be together and that there are other projects for their tandem that would give their fans a reason not to declare world war 3. Again the same source spoke to Bea and the actress is excited and at the same time nervous since this is her first primetime project without John Lloyd. As I said before, who do you think can step up and be Bea’s leading man? Derek Ramsey? Jon Avila? Zanjoe Marudo? Victor Basa? Sam Milby? Wait, I think Sam is a strong contender since Sam was originally their love triangle in a number of Star Cinema blockbusters (Close To You was one of them) and even in Maging Sino Ka Man….

Young actor Gerald Anderson has finally owned up to photos spreading through the Internet and admitted that he had a previous relationship with Shy, the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition “houseplayer” who wreaked havoc on the PBB teen  housemates’ emotions.

Gerald told reporters during a press conference for ABS-CBN’s upcoming television series “My Girl” (a Filipino version of the original Korean TV soap) that he and Shy had an “MU” (”mutual understanding”, Pinoyspeak referring to a romantic attachment that falls short of actual commitment) in the past.

Gerald confirmed that the photos and videos spreading on the Internet are authentic, and were taken two years ago during their MU period.

Evidently, based on the photos, going on MU includes liplock rights.

The photos started appearing on the Internet  after Shy (Sharleen Farina Runkle in real life) entered the PBB House this month.

According to media reports, both Gerald and Shy auditioned for 2006’s PBB Teen Edition Season 1. Gerald was picked as a housemate while Shy didn’t make it.  Shy then tried her luck on GMA-7 and was chosen as a contestant on the fourth season of “Star Struck”.

Shy eventually managed to enter the PBB house this month after she was tasked to be a “houseplayer” a housemate with a secret mission from Big Brother. Shy was tasked to sow intrigue among the PBB teen housemates for two weeks.

She has already left the house and has remained in the consciousness of PBB fans, as well as fans of the Gerald Anderson-Kim Chui loveteam, thanks to the Internet photos.

Gerald and Kim are now busy taping for “My Girl”. Gerald takes on the role of Julian, a rich, well-educated and serious type of guy who is the heir to a business empire.

Gerald’s character meets Kim’s Anderson will be Chiu’s leading man as Julian, a rich, well-educated and a serious type of guy, heir to a big business company.

Kim plays Jasmine, who is asked by Julian to pose as his long-lost cousin in order to fulfill the last wishes of his grandfather, who is already ailing and near death.

Watch the premiere of “My Girl” this coming Monday, May 26 on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida.

ALFIE LORENZO: Ang kakapal ng mga artistang nagsasabi ng “Thank you for making us no. 1″

Ang kakapal ng mga mukha ng mga artistang ipinagsisigawan pang: “Thank you for making us number one!”

Number one saan? Sana maging specific sila. Number one from the bottom? Number one ang kalaban? Saan?

A chair is still a chair even if there’s no one sitting there (Ricky Lo, The Philippine Star)

This blind item will be as vague as vague can be, with very subtle clues you can read between the lines — if you are perceptive enough. A popular artist (note: I’m not saying if he’s a singer, an actor or a singer-actor) was spotted by a Funfare DPA in Cebu where he bought a chair by famous furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue (from whom Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie bought a bed worth P300,000). The artist was with a girl who is neither his “past” nor his “present,” but who could be his immediate “future.” He was overheard by the Funfare DPA’s friend telling the girl, “Now you see how special you are to me. I bought you this very expensive piece!” Now, is a chair, to quote a popular song, still a chair even if there’s no one sitting there? Hmmmm.

Actor, cries to sleep every night (Ricky Lo, The Philippine Star)

The PA (production assistant) of an actor who has just separated from (or was he junked by?) his actress-girlfriend insists that the actor is “not guilty” as accused, that he has never been unfaithful, that he never “double-crossed” the actress by going out with another girl. Quoting the PA, another Funfare DPA said, “The actor is so hurt that he cries to sleep every night. Kawawa naman siya. He really loves his (immediate-ex) girlfriend.”

Actress Bing Loyzaga said that she and estranged husband, comedian-singer Janno Gibbs, are now in good terms. She, however, said that this does not mean they are going back into each other’s arms.

“We are okay. We are really okay. Right now we are really good. We have a lot of things that we still need to fix and solve pero we’re working on things but it doesn’t fall into category na kami na, we have to develop,” Loyzaga said.

The actress confirmed that Gibbs is staying with her in their family’s house.

“Right now, he stays with me in the same bedroom with my kids also…sometimes,” she said.

Loyzaga said that living again together under one roof is part of a learning process that they need to start all over again.

” ‘Yun na nga we have to get to know each in the sense na develop the trust, learn to talk. We have to start with ourselves first,” Loyzaga added.

The actress said that it’s true that her husband left their house for almost three years. “Oo, mayroong lumipat ng kabilang bahay. Mtagal-tagal din ‘yon, halos mga three years, oo nga nagulat nga ako.”

Gibbs alleged relationships with other women were said to be the reason behind their separation. The actor had been linked to numerous women, mostly showbiz colleagues.

When asked of how Gibbs returned to their house, Loyzaga said: “Maraming conversation, maraming dialogues. Pumupunta siya sa bahay to see the kids, tapos nanonood kami ng tape with the kids, then magtatanong siya do you wanna eat out? It’s like friends, it started out with friendship ganoon”.

“There were times na pag-uwi ko from taping natutulog sila ng mga anak ko sa kwarto wala akong masyadong choice kasi tulog na sila, so ako na lang ang sisingit,” the actress added.

Loyzaga said what is happening to them right now is a matter of respect wherein Gibbs also needs to ask her permission if he could sleep with them, meaning her and the kids.

She said their kids will always be the reason for them to settle things. They, however, never tried to intervene with the couple’s problems.

“Siyempre you know you talk, you get to know each other, you give each other space but ‘yun na nga, marami pang kailangang ayusin before masabi kong we are back, we are okay, kami na,” she said.

Loyzaga said that after all what happened to her and Gibbs, she needs time to heal her heart.

“…it took so much time that I was hurt, he was hurt. It will also take time to heal and I don’t wanna heal na half-bake. Kasi kapag half-bake, tapos manunumbat ka, what for? [Dapat hindi half-bake], para sure-shot.”

Loyzaga is now busy with her latest television series, “My Girl”, with Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. In the series, she will play the character of Auntie Bel, the motherly aunt of Julian (Anderson). For the series she will also work with her real father-in-law, actor Ronaldo Valdez.

Star Cinema pays tribute to (from top) Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, and Maricel Soriano by releasing The Women of Star Cinema collection DVDs.

In time for Star Cinema’s 15th anniversary in the film industry, Star Home Video has recently released original DVDs that will prove to be collectors’ items. The Women of Star Cinema collection is now available in all record bars for fans of these award-winning actresses.

Featuring three of the most prolific female stars today—the Star For All Seasons Vilma Santos, the Megastar Sharon Cuneta and the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano—the limited collectibles feature three of their most successful films.

VILMA SANTOS. Known as the Star for all Seasons, her popularity as an actress did not fade even when she became a public servant.

Dekada ‘70 (2002). A story of a family caught in the middle of a tumultuous decade, Dekada ‘70 details how a middle-class family struggled with the new changes that empowered Filipinos to rise against the government. While the government became more oppressive, people became more radical. The suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus, proclamation of Martial Law, bombing of Plaza Miranda, random arrests, and detention of political prisoners shaped the decade and helped shape the character of one woman as well. All these events were witnessed by Amanda Bartolome (Vilma Santos), a mother of five boys. While her sons grew up, they formed their own beliefs and led different lives. Amanda asserted her self-identity to make her stand as a citizen, a mother, and a woman.

Anak (2000). Josie (Vilma Santos) works as a domestic helper in Hong Kong to provide a better life for her family—only to find out after several years of absence that her family has fallen apart.

Bata, Bata…Paano Ka Ginawa? (1998). Based on the Palanca award-winning novel by Lualhati Bautista, this film tells the story of Lea Bustamante (Vilma Santos), a woman who chooses to live by her own principles and not upon the dictates of society. She is a mother of two children by different men and she is in danger of losing them to their fathers.

SHARON CUNETA. The Megastar is now celebrating her 30th anniversary in showbiz and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, her movie Caregiver is slated to be open in theaters nationwide on May 28.

Madrasta (1996). Not all stepmothers are wicked witches. In fact, many of them are like Mariel (Sharon Cuneta), a loving, caring individual who tries to belong in a family not her own and which cannot be truly hers.

Minsan, Minahal Kita (2000). Two people, both married to different partners, unexpectedly fall in love. But, their sense of duty to their respective families keeps their love in check, as well as keeping them away from each other.

Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (2003). Can a man and woman remain best friends? The possibilities are explored in this film about two people of opposite genders who have been best of friends for a long time. Both are searching for love and they just might end up finding it somewhere close by.

MARICEL SORIANO. The Diamond Star is still as lustrous as ever. She is slated to star in the upcoming suspense-thriller Florinda, the third installment of The Susan Roces Cinema Collection of ABS-CBN.

Ama, Ina, Anak (1996). A touching film which discusses the issue of adoption. A film that everyone can relate to, whether you are a mother, father or child.

Soltera (1999). Sandra (Maricel Soriano) is a 35-year old wedding coordinator by profession who falls in love with Eric (Diether Ocampo), a handsome young man 12 years her junior. Their age wide gap causes conflict with Sandra’s family. Worse, a romance develops between Eric and Sandra’s trusted young assistant Lisa (Claudine Barretto), leading Sandra and Eric to part ways. Sandra is left alone and pregnant. What is the right thing for her to do?

Separada (1994). A successful advertising executive finds herself alone when her husband leaves her for a pregnant mistress. Together with her two children, she learns that indeed there is life after a marital breakup.

Alfie Lorenzo (Abante): “Most outsanding star na, most promising star pa”

ABS-CBN’s newest star KC Concepcion has signed a movie contract with GMA-7’s movie outfit GMA Films.

Concepcion will be doing a light romance flick with matinee idol and GMA-7 contract star Richard Gutierrrez.

“I’m so excited. I’m so nervous. I think this is time naman para i-welcome ako sa GMA-7,” Concepcion exclusively told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

“It’s actually become an ex-deal. Richard was lent to Star Cinema, was lent to ABS-CBN by GMA, and in return Star or ABS-CBN is lending me to GMA. So ‘yun ang nakuha ng GMA because sila naman yung lumapit for the tandem,” she added.

She said that Star Cinema got Gutierrez only for a one-movie deal.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Films president Annette Gozon-Abrogar and other GMA-7 executives.

The actress was accompanied by her PA Puff, talent manager Jenny and talent manager Ms. Sandra Chavez.

Before the contract signing, Concepcion was warmly welcomed to GMA-7 by Gutierrez and network executives.

According to Chavez, one of Concepcion’s talent managers, she will start to shoot the movie under GMA Films this September.

Star Cinema movie

Prior to Concepcion’s signing with GMA Films she already signed a movie with Star Cinema for her first film.

Concepcion admitted that she prayed hard for the deal, and after it was sealed she lit candles at Madeleine Church in Paris.

“Nagsindi ako ng dalawang kandila and nag-thank you ako sa lahat ng nangyari. And talagang ‘yun nga yung imposible ay nangyari napagbigyan,” Concepcion said.

The actress went to Paris for a short vacation on May 1st, and flew back to the Philippines on May 8th.

Concepcion will start to shoot her film under Star Cinema next week. The expected playdate for the film is August 27th.

Last Monday, May 19th, Concepcion travelled to Marawi City in Lanao del Sur and helped the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in its rice distribution efforts, along with WFP’s global partner TNT.

Concepcion was appointed United Nations Ambassador for the World Food Program earlier this year.

Concepcion was literally born into Philippine showbiz royalty, being the daughter of actress and singer Sharon Cuneta (known to her fans as the “Megastar”) and former matinee idol and comebacking dramatic actor Gabby Concepcion.

Last Sunday grabe ang statement nila against Tito Alfie Lorenzo and Dolly Ann Carvajal.

Tinawag nilang “bitter old man posing as showbiz journalist” ang manager ni Judy Ann Santos.

GERRY OCAMPO Journal Online

As the Lopez business empire struggles to fight off corporate and political attacks, its head has assured stockholders that it will survive the crisis just as it survived martial law.

Oscar Lopez, chairman and chief executive officer of First Philippine Holdings Corp., gave the assurance in a speech before stockholders on Tuesday at the Meralco Theater.

“What is happening today is not something that is new to me or to the Lopez family. It happens with predictable regularity in various degrees of intensity whenever there are things that are greatly wrong in the country,” he said. “It first happened in the years immediately before martial law, when Meralco was also the principal target and when we were portrayed as the oligarchic enemies of society. It is happening again today. We survived the martial law dictatorship. We will survive this one, too.”

The Lopez group, particularly the Manila Electric Co., is under fire from administration officials for allegedly overcharging customers. Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) president Winston Garcia earlier demanded to see the financial records of the country’s largest power distributor and called for a management change in Meralco.

Garcia’s move sparked speculation of a government takeover of Meralco. GSIS holds a sizeable share in Meralco.

In his speech, Lopez said the government is using the electricity rates issue as “diversionary scapegoat in order to deflect attention away from the many problems and issues that our people face, and on which their leaders have failed them utterly.”

“The attacks have been vicious, both those that have come openly, and those that have come under cover of anonymity. Most have been against Meralco, but some have also been against our other corporations,” he said.

“Ultimately, they are against the Lopez family and our family’s ownership and management stake in our businesses. Partly in reprisal for the dogged determination shown by ABS-CBN in its crusade to expose the truth of our everyday lives, the good as well as the rotten,” Lopez pointed out.

Lopez made a point-by-point rebuttal of claims against the group, including accusations that it was involved in “self-dealing” when its Philippine Electric Corp. sells transformers to Meralco.

“Philec dominates the local market for utility and industrial transformers because it offers the lowest price, the highest quality and the best value-added services that no manufacturer, domestic or foreign, can match,” he said.

“We are proud to own Philec. We are proud of the fact that Philec is a competitive manufacturer. We are proud of the fact that Philec provides employment to Filipinos. We are proud of the fact that our transformers are made by Filipinos,” he said.

He also denied accusations of “ghost deliveries” involving First Gas. “When First Gas charged Meralco for capacity fees for 1,000 megawatts during the second half of the year 2000, this was because 1,000 megawatts was available for dispatch,” he said.

“Did First Gas request to be dispatched higher? The answer is yes and there is official documentation to support this. Was First Gas dispatched higher? The answer is no. And why was this? Because Napocor’s transmission line projects, the ones they had committed would be ready by the time the First Gas plants were ready to operate, were in fact delayed by five years. Yes, five whole years!” Lopez said.

“A default by Meralco would have led to a default by First Gas and this, in turn, could also have led to a default on the set of agreements and covenants by which the Camago Malampaya gas fields were developed and made commercial,” he said.

“Plowing through evidence can be tedious and tiresome. Its sole reward is the truth. And often, the truth does not make for good sound bytes,” he said.

“We continue to believe in the underlying potential of Meralco, by far the country’s largest utility, to serve its customers’ needs, and to do so as an efficiently-run, privately-owned enterprise, generating a good return on capital within the bounds permitted by law,” he said. “However, Meralco as a company, because of the vital function it serves for a large base of consumers, is very politicized and is an attractive and frequent target for those wishing to acquire or embellish a populist image.”

That girl, hindi yun papayag!

Kaya over and under, malinis ang aktor na ito.

I’m sure they will bring out the best in each other acting-wise to make this soap a success,” ayon kay forumer Esmeirene.

“I hope it’s Piolo because I watched Dreamboy and I think they look good [together]. I hope Piolo would be paired up next with someone who clicks,” sabi ni forumer Essej.

oni Gonzaga: ‘I’m just lucky’
052208-Toni02.jpgToni Gonzaga is the star of several hit movies, host of a number of hit shows, and singer with two platinum-award winning albums. But for all of her success, she believes that it’s all due to luck.

That’s it for me. I’m speaking for myself,” she explains during the recent launch of her third album, Love Is… Her third album contains her renditions of all-time favorites, such as You’re In Love, If I Give You My Heart, Take Me, I’ll Follow You, Insensitive, Steep, I’ve Been Waiting, and Someone’s Always Saying Goodbye. There’s also an original composition, Incapable, included in the album.

“I know that I can do so many things. But I also know that someone out there can do so much more and so much better than I do. I’m just so fortunate that I’ve been given the chances and the breaks and I was blessed with luck.”Luck is definitely on her side. Toni is currently one of the bestselling local recording artists. Her second album, Falling In Love, is a big hit, selling a whopping 29,000 units–despite the music piracy problem. Her record label, Star Records, adds that the album is continuing to sell well.

While she is flattered with the platinum and multi-media star monickers that have been bestowed on her, she realizes that they also carry some pressure. “When you’re in the business and people start to appreciate you and recognize your abilities and how you do your work, it’s flattering and overwhelming. But at the same time, it’s something that you don’t want to put into your head,” Toni explains.

She believes that these names mean she has to live up to them, to prove herself worthy. “You have to prove yourself more and more every year and it does not stop,” she ends.

Richard Gutierrez visits ABS-CBN for the first time
KC-Richard.jpgRichard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion held hands upon their arrival at ABS-CBN yesterday (May 20) for the story conference of their movie under Star Cinema. The actor recently signed a one-picture contract deal with the film outfit with consent from his mother network GMA. “I consider this an honor, not everyone is given the opportunity to be here in ABS-CBN… ‘Di lahat ng artist nabibigyan ng opportunity to be here legally,” Richard said with a wide smile. KC had to laugh at his disbelief that he was on his rival network’s premises. “First time makatapak sa ABS!” she commented.

The press couldn’t help but notice KC and Richard’s closeness and had to ask what the status of their relationship is. The two just gave knowing smiles and said they are still getting to know each other better. “I’m looking forward to working with you and getting to know you even more. Thank you for being a friend,” the budding actress told her first big screen partner. Richard also had sweet words for KC. “There’s something special in her. She’s a great person. Thank you for sticking to the project and making things happen. Thank you for believing in me as a leading man.

The KC-Richard project will be shot partly in Greece and will be directed by Joyce Bernal.

Ara Mina reinvented
052308-AraMina02.jpgWhen Ara Mina decided to leave her old network for ABS-CBN at the end of 2007, she had also decided to reinvent herself as an actress. That decision has paid off, earning praises for her kontrabida role (which was a change from her usual bida roles) in Prinsesa ng Banyera. She initially was a co-host on Wowowee before she signed on to the series that was on its second season that time.

Wala naman akong masyadong against sa kabila. Inalagaan rin naman nila ako for 10 years. But sometimes you need to do something for yourself. Yung may bago naman. Parang kailangan naman, you need to reinvent yourself,” she explains.

Prinesa ng Banyera continues to garner high ratings, with some saying Ara’s powerful portrayal as Cassandra made a big contribution to boost the ratings.

Ara will again play the bad girl in Ligaw na Bulaklak, which will replace Prinsesa ng Banyera which ends on May 23. Her second contrabida role pits her against Roxanne Guinoo, the teleserye’s lead star. But Ara doesn’t seem to mind being cast in these kinds of roles for a while. “I don’t think dun ako ililinya ng management for life.

Ara does miss doing a primetime show, but she takes it all in perspective. “It does not matter kung primetime man o hindi. Ang importante dito eh, tinatangkilik ng tao yung programa,” she asserts.
