When Love Begins Earned P69M in 2 Weeks
The Star Cinema and Viva Films’ romantic drama When Love Begins has already grossed P 69,277,632.90 on its two weeks of running. The Aga Muhlach-Anne Curtis starrer was second only to Hollywood superhero movie Iron Man, which already raked in P 120,930,291.90 for 2 weeks.
Compared with Aga’s previous movie “A Love Story” with Maricel Soriano and Angelica Panganiban, When Love Begins is lackluster at the boxoffice. A Love Story has grossed P 130,169,177.10 and it ran for 8 weeks. A Love Story was no. 1 in 3 weeks beating the Hollywood movie “Bourne Ultimatum” starring Matt Damon which also premiered last August 15, 2007.
Although When Love Begins can still run to 4 to 6 weeks of screening, it could only pull in approximately P10 million or less specially that Hollywood summer movies are now hitting the theaters. For what its worth, When Love Begins received a grade of “B” from the Cinema Evaluation Board which means the producers will only pay 50% for its amusement tax.
The independent movie “Ploning”, produced by various filmmakers collectively known as “Panoramanila”, has grossed P 10,546,847.40 in 2 weeks. This is an above the average performance for an indie-movie in the country. Furthermore, the Judy Ann Santos starrer was shown only in SM cinemas nationwide. Plus, it’s the first movie this year to receive a grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board.
Judy Ann’s previous movies like Ouija and Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo has grossed P87.3 M and P122.9 M respectively. Of course, we have to consider that SSS has no Hollywood movie competitor compared to Ouija so these two movies are both hits. And while her last 2 films are commercial successes, her latest film “Ploning” was a critical success.
Let’s take a look at this year’s box-office so far, shall we?

Bea Alonzo, on the look-out for leading man
Now that it has been officially announced that Bea Alonzo will play the lead role in Yo soy Betty La Fea, the next question is, who will play the character of Armando, the leading man of Betty?
This is considered a plum role because Armando Mendoza’s character is very interesting. Armando is handsome, smart, well-educated and is the president of the fashion design company Eco Moda where Betty works as his secretary.
He is also the one who will capture the heart of Betty.
When Alonzo was asked by Ruffa Gutierrez in The Buzz last Sunday, she shared her top 5 choices, Gabby Concepcion, Aga Muhlach, Diether Ocampo, Piolo Pascual and Jake Cuenca for the role of her leading man.
These are the men Bea personally chose for the role. But according to management, the production team has already decided on who will play her Armando.
Is he one of the guys Bea chose? Who is this lucky actor?

Eniwey, wish lang ni yours truly ay makita nina Willie, Mariel at Valerie Concepcion sa Hawaii ang nag-iisang lalaking artistang hinahawakan namin noon as talent at naging ka-live-in (without sex, ‘noh!) na si Tom Babauta na naging ka-love team noon ni Snooky Serna sa Regal Films.
Papi Willie, if ever na masight n’o nga sa Hawaii si Tom Babauta, i-guest mo naman sa Wheel of Fortune, este, Willie of Fortune, para malaman ni yours truly kung maganda ang naging fortune niya sa pagbabalik-Hawaii during EDSA Revolution.
Yezzz, at that time ay pinauwi kasi si Tom ng erpat niya for fear na baka madampot ng military dito ang kanyang only son. Kasi ba naman, nakisali rin ang damungkang sa mga rally-rally noon against the Marcos government at saka dahil lagi kaming run out of cash noon, okra na lang ang ipinakakain sa kanya ni yours truly na hindi niya malunuk-lunok. Ha..ha..ha!
Hayyy, those were the days talaga, Ateng Janiz, konting pera pero maligaya na, tsuk!
‘Nga pala, kauuwi lang dito from Canada ng isa naming friend at ibinalita nito na sikat na sikat daw du’n si Willie at ang Wowowee. Ang yabang-yabang daw ng mga Pinoy du’n kapag nakasuot ng Wowowee jacket.
Ganu’n? Puwes, magtinda na lang tayo ng Wowowee jacket ng Hammerhead sa Canada, Ateng Janiz!

Aga Muhlach might be reunited with Sharon Cuneta in a movie next year

With a sitcom That’s My Doc, the box-office hit When Love Begins, and a new endorsement deal with Sun Cellular tucked under his belt, premiere actor Aga Muhlach feels really blessed these days.
At the Sun Cellular press luncheon held yesterday, May 9, at the Bar One of Holiday Inn Galleria Manila in Pasig City, Aga said he is happy and proud to be part of the Sun Cellular family.
“Sun [Cellular] is a new player, there’s room for growth and improvement, so I want to be a part of that. It’s a new leaf, bagong pahina sa buhay ko ‘to.”
And speaking of new things in his life, more projects are lined up for the talented 38-year-old actor, including a Star Cinema movie with the Megastar Sharon Cuneta in 2009.
“There’s a script already,” Aga said. “They pitched it to Sharon before she left for London and when Sharon was in London they pitched it to me. We’re going to meet with Sharon in two weeks time and we’re going to discuss about the story and we’re going to see how it goes.”
Sharon just returned from shooting Caregiver in London, her new movie with Star Cinema after four years.
“Medyo mahirap kasi ‘yong pelikula,” Aga said about his planned movie with Sharon. “Unang-una, we’re going to be working abroad again, a different country, and it’s hard to work ‘pag nasa ibang bansa ka talaga, nakakapagod.”
When pressed for more details about the movie. Aga just said smiling, “Basta ‘yon lang muna. You’ll find out naman.”
There are also rumors that Aga will guest star in international star Lea Salonga’s 30th anniversary concert billed Lea, My Life… On Stage! on May 23 and 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center Plenary Hall.
“Well, I’d love to do that. But Lea Salonga singing, an orchestra… What am I going to do there? Magpapatawa na lang ako doon!” Aga says with a laugh. “Pero kung magge-guest talaga ako doon, then I will insist that I sing, di ba? I’ll sing one song, a duet with her. ‘Pag pumatong na ‘yong boses ni Lea sa akin, believe me, ang ganda ng boses ko!”
Aga and Lea starred in the 1992 romantic movie Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal and Sana Maulit Muli in 1995.
Will there be a follow-up anytime soon? “I’d love to do another movie with Lea, of course. Because I spoke with the husband [Robert Chien], parang sabi niya, ‘Lea can only do a movie if it’s with you.’”
This was confirmed by Lea herself at the presscon of her anniversary concert last May 7. “Only if with Aga,” she quipped when asked if she’s going to do another movie.
Aga Muhlach is the newest endorser of Sun Cellular

Aga Muhlach, one of the entertainment industry’s most talented actors, is now the newest celebrity endorser of Sun Cellular.
The 38-year-old actor recently signed with the said mobile network, joining actress and host Iya Villania, R&B crooner Jay-R, and soap princess Maja Salvador, in its roster of celebrity endorsers.
Aga, who has recently starred opposite Anne Curtis in the romantic drama When Love Begins, is very delighted to be part of the Sun Cellular family. “Sun allows me to stay connected with everyone important to me. They are all just a phone call away,” he says.
Joan Dueñas, Sun Cellular Assistant Vice President for Prepaid Business is equally pleased to have the actor as the mobile company’s newest addition.
In an interview with Philippine Star, she said, “We are excited to have Aga Muhlach as our endorser [because] he is very talented, has a well-rounded personality, is adventurous, and is always [ready] to try out new things.”
She adds, “He is committed to excel in his craft, making sure he is enjoying it at the same time. Plus, he exudes charm and warmth to people around him.”
Aga, who stars in the ABS-CBN sitcom That’s My Doc, is also a devoted husband to beauty title holder Charlene Gonzales, a loving dad to twins Andres and Atasha, a committed sportsman, and a successful businessman.
WHEN LOVE BEGINS BOX OFFICE HIT!
At ganun din, still counting… Well let’s just wait and see!
Iron Man at movie nina Aga Muhlach at Anne Curtis, binangga…JUDY ANN SANTOS, KULELAT!
Iron Man-April 30 (14,880,000), May 1 (17,310,000), May 2 (9,420,000). Gross receipt is 41,610,000.
When Love Begins-April 30 (6,430,000) May 1 (11,810,000), May 2 (7,110,000). Gross receipt is 25,350,000.
Ploning- April 30 (1,370,000) May 1 (3,210,000), May 2 (1,610,000).
That was the time na Aga Muhlach was on top of the heap at hindi pa sumusulpot si Richard Gutierrez sa eksena.
Judy Ann Santos might not be a perfect person, but she is a thorough professional at alam na alam niya ang kalakaran ng showbiz at demands ng propesyon na pinasok niya.
Tama ba kami, mahal naming patnugot? (Mismo! Ed)

Aga Muhlach happy for box-office success of “When Love Begins”

“Of course, masaya,” ngiti ni Aga. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa mga nanonood. I hope they really enjoyed the movie.”
“It’s a long weekend. They [moviegoers] have enough time to watch both movies. So, sana suportahan nila parehas ng mga Pinoy ang movie namin [ni Juday] because we’re up against an international movie also, di ba?” pahayag ni Aga.
“I really don’t know what to say,” sabi ni Aga. “The only thing I can say siguro is sana people will continue to support our movie.”
REVIEW: “Ploning” and “When Love Begins”

It is understandable why movie producers would want to premiere their films on this auspicious day, the 30th of April. For a lot of Filipinos, the end of the month signifies pay day, making it the perfect chance to relax and see a movie.
Two locally produced movies will open today: Panoramanila Pictures Co.’s Ploning and the Star Cinema-Viva Films co-production When Love Begins. These two films were shot in beautiful locations in the Philippines and both deal with love but aim to show different facets of love.
Ploning is graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) and is classified General Patronage by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). It is directed by first-time director Dante Nico Garcia. Ploning will be screened exclusively in SM cinemas starting today and will be shown in other theater houses starting May 7.
When Love Begins is rated “B” by the CEB and is classified PG13 by the MTRCB. It is directed by Jose Javier Reyes, who has been named Best Director several times, the most recent of which was for Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo in the 2006 Metro Manila Film Fest and the FAMAS. When Love Begins screens at 150 theaters nationwide.
PLONING. Judy Ann Santos portrays Ploning, the town beauty of Cuyo, Palawan, who is still unmarried at the age of 30. She likes to spend her time looking out to the sea and rubbing a balugo seed in memory of her great love Tomas. To the young boy Digo, ‘Nay Ploning is his surrogate mother since his biological mother Juaning (Eugee Domingo) is a paralyzed woman. Digo is portrayed effectively by first-time actor Cedric Amit, a young Cuyonon whose acting seems effortless.
The movie shifts back and forth from the 1980s to the present several times but through excellent storytelling, you won’t get lost by the details tying them all together. Expect the first part of the movie to be slow-paced, reflective of the laidback life of the Cuyonons. Around 40 percent of the movie is in the Cuyonon dialect so be prepared to keep up with the Tagalog subtitles as you watch the story unfold onscreen.
Ploning boasts stunning cinematography that showcases the sights in Cuyo such as the pristine Capusan beach, a bird sanctuary, a rocky pier and glorious golden sunsets that are simply breathtaking.
As Ploning, Judy Ann exhibits a wisdom and maturity beyond her years. Through her expressive eyes and enigmatic smile, we see that she is very much in love even though she has no visible partner onscreen. It’s not easy learning the Cuyonon dialect but she delivers her lines almost as if she is a native of the province. It won’t be surprising if Judy Ann nabs Best Actress awards for her heartfelt portrayal of Ploning.
Gina Pareño is Intang, the mother of Tomas, who pours out her grief and frustration in the climactic moment of Ploning. Tony Mabesa gives a subdued performance as the father of Ploning and his last scene with Juday will definitely tug at the heartstrings of people who feel misunderstood by their fathers.
Why it’s worth your movie ticket: Ploning has a lot of touching moments that will have you in tears.
WHEN LOVE BEGINS. Aga Muhlach and Anne Curtis are paired together for the first time onscreen with favorable results. Ben Caballero (Aga) is a lawyer who represents an environmental group while Mitch Valmonte (Anne) is involved in the marketing department of her father’s real estate company. Mitch’s father Paco (Christopher de Leon) is facing legal troubles because of Atty. Caballero. This situation forces Mitch to choose between her father and her new flame.
When Love Begins is a study of two people afflicted with commitment phobia—both Ben and Mitch are afraid of responsibilities because they have been burned by love in the past. Ben’s family thinks he needs some growing up to do while Mitch’s father would rather let her decide what to do with the man who is challenging him in court. Mitch must decide where her loyalties lie—the family business or the man who considers her as his “girlfriend—in a way.”
Aga can still make hearts flutter with his bedimpled smile and natural playfulness. Even during a dramatic hospital scene involving his mother, played by Boots Anson-Roa, Aga shows his charm that doesn’t fail to elicit chuckles from the audience.
Anne deserves notice for her portrayal of the liberated and cynical girl Mitch. Her bikini-worthy body looks amazing onscreen and she manages to show a side of her that is aggressive when it comes to getting what she wants.
Shot partly in Boracay, When Love Begins shows that something that started out as a summer fling just might develop into something more serious. It’s a gentle reminder for everyone that taking care of the environment is everyone’s job, not just lobbyists just like Ben and his friends. And if you’ve got a “non-relationship” going on between you and your significant other, you just might pick up a few tips from Ben and Mitch.
Why it’s worth your movie ticket: When Love Begins has the elements of a good love story and you can’t help but empathize with the characters who had the right love at the wrong time.
| Eager anticipation for “When Love Begins |
Ever since the trailer was first aired on TV, fans have been waiting in anticipation for When Love Begins which opens in theatres today, April 30. Aga Muhlach and Anne Curtis can hardly believe the overwhelming support they have been receiving even weeks before the showing.
“We are so happy that a lot of friends, supporters, and people that I don’t know are approaching us–me and Aga–and they’re saying that they’re watching out for the movie!” Anne gushes. She was simply bursting with excitement as she further shared the responses to her first team up with the original heartthrob. “I was told by Star Cinema people that they’ve been getting a lot of emails… And in Internet forums, there’s a lot of anticipation for When Love Begins. I hope that they will not be disappointed. The movie has a lot of lessons, lots of emotional values, lots of heart. This is a very memorable movie for me–and for Aga, too!”
When Love Begins is now showing in theaters nationwide. The schedule for its international screenings is as follows: May 2 to 16 in Guam; May 9 to 15 in Las Vegas and San Diego; May 16 to 22 in Los Angeles; May 23 to 29 in Seattle; May 30 to June 5 in Hawaii; May 22 to 24 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; May 29 to 31 in Qatar and Bahrain; and May 16 in Toronto. |
Meet Aga’s cute new patients in That’s My Doc

Thea (Bea Alonzo) brings her niece Sophia (Sophia Baars) to Doc Aga (Aga Muhlach) for a check-up. Apparently, Sophia had fainted while Thea was taking her to ballet class. Doc Aga later discovers that Thea has been putting too much MSG in Sophia’s food, resulting in the fainting spells.
Meanwhile, Ocs (Nova Villa) accidentally hits a street kid named
Jai (Jairus Aquino) with her pedicab. She immediately brings Jai to Aga’s clinic for treatment. Later, Doc Aga discovers the boy’s clever survival instincts, which leads him to realize that a BarangayHealthCenter would benefit many children.
In the meantime, Major Ret (Roderick Paulate) has been appointed as the Lupong Tagapamayapa of Tabuneknek. This sudden career change will undoubtedly bring Ret more misadventures.

Aga’s “That’s My Doc” moves to new timeslot
Actor Aga Muhlach is happy now that his sitcom “That’s My Doc” has been moved to a new time slot.
“Naniniwala pa din ako na kailangan pa din ng tao ang katatawanan sa buhay nila. So I’m just glad na mapapanood kami ng Sabado ng ala-sais ng gabi so maraming bata ang makakapanood. I mean the parents and the kids yung buong pamilya nila mayroon silang makikitang masaya naman hindi naman puro problema,” said Muhlach.
Muhlach admitted he was unhappy with his show’s initial time slot.
“Hindi ko din ipagkakaila na sumama ang loob ko talaga noong nilagay kami ng late, gumawa kami ng programang pambata tapos ilalagay mo kami sa alas nuebe, alas diyes ng gabi I felt really bad not because para sa akin, sabi ko gumagawa ka ng magandang plano sa mga kabataan, sa mga bata tapos parang binabalewala nila.
“So medyo hindi ko na din nagustuhan yung ano. I’m just happy that they did something about it,” Muhlach added.
Muhlach in “That’s My Doc” is a pediatrician who lives with the people of Barangay Tabuneknek. The doctor plans to open his own center for kids with the help of his girlfriend Greta (Lara Quigaman) and aunt Ocs (Nova Villa).
Aga’s arch enemy in the show is Major Ret played by Roderick Paulate.
Aside from the new time slot, new kids will also be part of the show like Jairus Aquino, Sophia Baars and Bronson.
Recently, USTv Student’s Choice Awards gave the nod to “That’s My Doc” as the Best Sitcom for showing good morals and values to the youth.
“That’s My Doc” also stars Bayani Agbayani, Pokwang and Celine Lim. Watch the show with its new time slot every Saturday, 6 p.m. after “Cinema FPJ: Da King on ABS-CBN.
Aga’s beautiful family
Muhlach, the father of beautiful twins Atasha and Andres shared that right now he and his wife Charlene Gonzales have no plans of having a new baby.
“Wala pa. Me and my wife are very happy with our set up now. We can’t ask for anything more. We have healthy kids,” Muhlach said.
The actor said he and his wife are really doing fine as a couple and as a parents. He also said that he can’t ask more from God since they have almost everything.
“Sabi ko nga mahirap gamitin ang pangalan ng ating Panginoong Diyos but you know everything happens in God’s time. We have plans but God’s plans are really greater than ours,” Muhlach said.
Transfer issue
Muhlach also put an end to the issue of transferring to another network.
“I think hindi naman siguro mawawala kahit saan yung offers like even sa movies. I have movie offers not only from Star Cinema kung hindi sa iba iba ding production. And parang sa TV din mayroong offers din from different stations also and yun may mga ganoon.
“It’s a nice feeling na mayroong nag-iisip na mga taga-labas na mga taga-iba aside from dito sa ABS-CBN but hindi ko kinaano na yung pagiging grateful ko sa ABS-CBN na kung saan ako halos nag-umpisa yung “Oki Doki Doc” at mula noon hindi ako pinabayaan but you know hindi ko din ipagkakaila na talagang sumama ang loob ko talaga,” he said.
“Ploning” vs “When Love Begins”
Muhlach is also promoting his film under Star Cinema entitled “When Love Begins”. He said that he has nothing to do with the choice of playdate for his film.
His movie will open on April 30th, the same time as the release of the movie starring actress Judy Ann Santos entitled “Ploning.”
“I don’t wanna comment on that really. It’s really none of my business. There’s no tampo, tampo issue. This is my movie “When Love Begins” ginagawa ko ang pelikula as always and every year gagawa ako ng pelikula ipapalabas sa kahit anong playdate ipalabas yan, at palagi kong pino-promote yan, at alam naman nila na pinapakaganda ko ang lahat ng pelikulang ginagawa ko and I can assure them of a nice film really.”
When Love begins Movie trailer and Pics
In When Love Begins, Aga plays a lawyer-turned-environmentalist named Ben Caballero while Anne is a marketing executive named Michelle “Mitch” Valmonte. Christopher de Leon is also included in the movie and he plays a special role in this movie as Anne’s father. | Joey Reyes directs When Love Begins |
Fresh from his string of box-office hits, movie director Joey Reyes makes summer sizzle with a romantic drama featuring two of the hottest stars in the industry.Set primarily in picturesque Boracay, When Love Begins features Aga Muhlach and Anne Curtis portraying people dealing with issues of commitment and conflict.Direk Joey says that the movie has a very personal meaning to him because of his fascination with the location. “I’ve always felt that all the movies shot in Boracay have never captured the true beauty of the island.I go there thrice a year, so going back there and doing a movie was really an experience. I consider Bora one of the most beautiful places on earth. It’s very inspiring to work there. Boracay has always been my sanctuary and for the first time I was allowed to invade my sanctuary. At first it was awkward, but it was really worth it,” he reveals. As to working with Aga, Direk Joey says,“I’ve done so many movies with Aga Muhlach before, and it’s always a pleasant experience. He’s a personal friend, so I’m looking forward to working with him.” Though this is the first time that Direk Joey will be working with Anne, he feels privileged to be directing the young pretty actress. “Anne is so uncomplicated, walang arte, walang kiyeme, napakabait at pleasant na bata. I want to work with her again soon!” he shares.

Aga was equally pleased with the positive feedback. “For me the measure of success talaga is not the awards. Although I’m thankful for those, pero sukatan talaga sa akin kapag nilalapitan ako ng mga tao at sinasabing ang ganda ganda ng pelikula ko, or na-touch sila or may natutunan sila. But this time for When Love Begins, it’s different kasi trailer pa lang na-ta-touch na daw sila. At dahil dito gusto na nila mapanood.” Like Anne, he really enjoyed shooting their scenes in Boracay. “The Boracay experience is awesome. The commitment factor… tumatak ng todo sa mga nakakapanood ng teasers at trailers. And the bond that Anne, Direk Joey [Reyes], and I made while doing this is priceless. Kaya I wanna share this movie with everybody.”
